One aim of the project has been to identify where fatal police shootings take place. To that end, the research team developed geographical coordinates for each case, which were used to place each shooting in the county where it took place.
The first map shows the spatial distribution of all fatal police shootings between 2014 and 2018:

The evidence collected over the course of the project makes it clear that police shootings take place in a wide variety of communities. They happen in counties that are large and small, urban or suburban or rural, majority white and majority minority.
The spatial pattern of shootings for youth shows a similar distribution:

The overall number of police shootings of youth is quite a bit lower, with 6,291 shootings overall and 1,097 for youth. Nonetheless, both types of shootings remain widely dispersed when examined geographically.
